Step 1: Understand That HR Is Not a Licensed Profession
You do NOT need a license to work in HR in Ontario.However, HRPA certification:

Step 2: Evaluate Your Education (Optional but Recommended)

Step 4:Exams Required for the CHRP Designation
1. CHRP Knowledge Exam (CHRP‑KE)
175 multiple‑choice questions

Topics include workforce planning, HR strategy, compensation, recruitment, employee relations, learning & development, and ethics
Exam results valid for 15 years
Purpose: Confirms foundational HR knowledge required for practice in Ontario.
2. CHRP Employment Law Exam
Approximately 110 multiple‑choice questions
Focus on Ontario and Canadian employment law, including:
Employment Standards Act (ESA)
Human Rights Code
Employment contracts and termination
Labour relations principles
Must pass CHRP Knowledge Exam first
Results valid for 10 years
Purpose: Demonstrates ability to apply employment law in HR decision‑making.
Step 6: Meet the Experience Requirement
To earn the CHRP designation, you must complete:
1 year (1,500 hours) of HR-related work experience
Experience can be gained before or after the exam
International HR experience may be partially recognized, but Canadian experience is strongly preferred
Step 7: Maintain the Designation
Once certified:
Follow HRPA Code of Ethics
Complete Continuing Professional Development (CPD) annually
Renew membership each year
